34 weeks and calmbirth

last week i was 34 weeks (this week i'm 35, but that is for another post).

week 34 brought us calmbirth.

we attended calmbirth classes in the southern highlands last weekend after much recommendation from my sister and a midwife at our hospital.

we drove through the beautiful hills up through robertson and bowral to arrive in mittagong. the classes were held in a new industrial estate on the top level of the calmbirth building. we met there along with twelve other pregnant couples, eager to learn. most of the women were not as far along in their pregnancy as i was. their little bellies barely noticeable under their tops.

there was a truckie, some who worked in marketing, public servants, a nurse, business owners, a farmer, a costume designer, a p.e teacher, a few others and us. we were all there for one thing - to learn how to birth our babies without fear.

the world is full of the belief that giving birth is scary, bloody, something to get done, excruciating, gross etc. we've all heard the stories, the horror stories - the stories that make these fears real. birth can be all of those things.

birth can also be beautiful, intense, happy, painless, ecstatic and enjoyable. that's what we learnt and that's the kind of birth we are preparing for, even expecting.

we know that there are some very real situations that can arise in birth that are emergencies that call for medical help. we know that if we have bumps in our road, we will be so very grateful for medicine and the saving it can do.

for now, we will breath our way through the next few weeks. using visualisation, meditation, touch and relaxation to encourage only positive feelings, hormones, perceptions and thoughts about this incredible journey we are on and the birth experience we want and know we can have.

  2. I am so excited for you.....this is going to be the most joyous of days. I had very very different labours resulting in my four beautiful children and I can promise you that you will look back on your labour as one of most defining moments of your life. There is NOTHING like the moment you first meet your child......like Christmas times one million millions :)

  3. Oh just beautiful. Peter Jackson's voice was in my head during my labour. It helped so much. A smooth, beautiful, intense (SO intense) labour of five hours or so.

Have you changed your hair again, Kesh? I go between red and ballyage or whatever it's called too ;)

  4. A happy birth, beautiful, enjoyable is totally possible! Note I didn't say painless - haha. I'm so glad that that is what you are preparing for. I hope that your birth is everything that you are expecting, more than likely it will be better! And no words care adequately describe the feeling of pride, joy and love when that baby is out and in your arms!

  6. Thank you for this post Kesh, I am now 26weeks and although this is baby number two I am still nervous about the birth, I cannot hide that from myself. I am off to have a look at the Calmbirth classes in my area and see if this is what I need.

  7. Beautiful Kesh, I hope the labour and birth of your little one is everything that you want it to be. I loved my births, both calm, quick and natural, pain surprisingly bearable and the love you feel when you first lay eyes on that little baby is indescribable. I wish you and Tim all the best. xx

  8. Birth is such a sacred thing. I consider the 3 times I've done it to be the most incredible experiences of my life : a complete privilege. If you want a cheerleader for positive birthing, I'm your woman. I am often met with disbelief when I talk about my joyful, painless* birth experiences... that will always sadden me a little.

    * seriously, honestly not pain as I know it : the most unique, altered state I've ever experienced but not negative and not painful.

Yay for you guys x C

The idea of calmbirth has really intrigued me. I wonder if I will be strong enough to be up to the task when my turn comes.

  14. there will be pain....(unless you have pain relief)....but it's a good pain, because it's bringing your babe to you. you don't need to fight it or be frightened of it.
with each contraction (in the last stages) i would chant 'this pain is a good pain, this pain is bringing my baby to me'. it helped me stay focused. oh and i can't begin to say enough about the wonders of a water birth!! brilliant for pain relief. i think it's really important to know exactly what you are in for, what potentially could happen and how you will deal with it because stress is no good when you are labouring.
it's an amazing experience - one i will always cherish forever.
